Growing
Controversy between Environmentalists and Hog Producers Stresses
Urgency of the Release of Innoventor Engineering’s Air Cleaning
Technology

St. Louis Innoventor Engineering, Inc. has announced the release of their
Air Scrubber, a system developed to reduce particulate and odor
emissions from hog farms. Innoventor's president said that growing controversy
between environmental agencies, communities and hog producers has
pushed the timetable for production of the Air Scrubber.
Innoventor officials said they feel the pork producers will welcome technology that allows
them to affordably and effectively clean up their operations - the
release of the Air Scrubber to the industry is a "win-win" development
for all concerned.
Innoventor designed the Air Scrubber with the guidance of researchers from Iowa State
University and the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. This
system removes odors and particulate from the air emitted from swine
and other animal confinement buildings using the principle of conservation
of particle momentum. This practice is widely used in other industrial
applications but is unique to this segment of the food production
industry.
Odor samples collected and analyzed by the researchers from a southern Illinois
farm equipped with the Air Scrubber recorded a 80 percent reduction
in odor across the device. The device remained in operation for
a period of six months without maintenance or reduction of efficiency.
The Air Scrubber is practical in its application, working in tandem with existing
systems already in place on most major hog farms. As a systems retrofit,
the Air Scrubber also holds down the cost of implementation and
operation.
Innoventor's team of engineers is working to develop a "complete environmental solution"
for waste from hog farms. A technique to control odors and waste
released by lagoons is in development and lagoon cleanup procedures
are being evaluated.
